Benin Republic head coach, Gernot Rohr, heaped glowing praise on Super Eagles star Ademola Lookman, admitting his team was powerless to stop the Atalanta forward during their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
Lookman was the star player as Nigeria kicked off their AFCON qualifying campaign in a commanding way, securing a thrilling 3-0 victory over Benin at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Saturday, Footballrover reports
The Atalanta winger stole the spotlight, netting Nigeria’s first and last goals of the encounter.
His opening goal was nothing short of sensational, as he danced past three Benin defenders before coolly slotting the ball into the net in first-half stoppage time.
The 26-year-old later sealed his brace eight minutes from the final whistle, rising to nod home Nigeria’s third goal after a brilliant assist from Nantes forward Moses Simon.
Meanwhile, Galatasaray new man Victor Osimhen was responsible for Nigeria’s second goal, completing the Super Eagles’ dominant performance.
Speaking after the match, the former Super Eagles coach admitted that he wasn’t surprised by the result, acknowledging the immense talent within the Nigerian squad.
“They played with confidence and flair, and Ademola Lookman was simply unstoppable,” he said.
Lookman’s impressive display earned him the Man of the Match award, capping off a memorable night for the Nigerian international.
