In their AFCON 2023 opener against Equatorial Guinea, Head Coach Jose Peseiro of the Super Eagles cited challenging weather as a key factor in the team’s draw.
In a post-match analysis, Coach Jose Peseiro shared his disappointment with the draw against Equatorial Guinea during the AFCON 2023 opener, Footballrover reports.
Despite the setback, Peseiro remains optimistic about a turnaround in the team’s fortunes as the tournament progresses.
Peseiro acknowledged the need for clinical finishing in upcoming games after his side’s poor display in front of goal cost them victory in the opening Group A tie against Equatorial Guinea.
Star striker Victor Osimhen managed to level the score with a well-executed header from Ademola Lookman’s cross, responding to Iban Salvador’s earlier goal for Equatorial Guinea.
However, missed opportunities from Osimhen and Zaidu Sanusi prevented the Super Eagles from securing a decisive victory.
Peseiro shed light on the challenging conditions his team faced, emphasising that the scorching Abidjan weather played a significant role in their performance.
The Portuguese coach highlighted the impact of the unfavourable weather, stating,
“It’s not easy to play under these conditions. We couldn’t press as we should because of the heat.”
The game, played at 2 p.m., subjected the players to high temperatures and humidity, making it a challenging environment.
Peseiro commended his players for managing the adverse weather conditions but stressed the importance of improving finishing.
“We deserved to win this game because we created many chances. Therefore, we need to improve on our finishing,” he remarked.
