Today’s showdown was all about the Super Eagles Derbies and six Nigerian players found themselves battling for points for their various teams during the Premier Leagues games on Saturday.
At the Goodison Park, Alex Iwobi displayed yet another impressive midfield performance to help Everton grab a late draw against Taiwo Awoniyi and his side – Nottingham Forest.
Iwobi and Awoniyi faced each other on the pitch while their Nigerian counterpart – Emmanuel Dennis remained on the bench during the Super Eagles Derby which ended 1-1.
While the former Union Berlin forward was struggling to find his footings, Iwobi was bossing the midfield for the Frank Lampard side and barely 61 minutes into the game, the Forest record signing – Taiwo Awoniyi was later replaced by another new signing – Morgan Gibbs-White.
Alex Iwobiβs game by numbers vs Nottingham Forest:
100% tackles won
79% pass accuracy
68 touches
5/6 ground duels won
4 key passes
2/3 successful dribbles
2/2 take-ons completed
He also won possession more times than any other player (11)
Enjoying life in the middle of the park.
Iwobi, who was absolutely brilliant, has finally found his best position as he is now a monster in that Midfield. Easily Evertonβs best player this season, all thanks to Lampard.
However, it was Gray’s late equalizer that guaranteed Everton wouldn’t begin the season with three straight defeats, although the winger was quite outstanding throughout the game.
Everton finally earned their first point of the campaign with that late equalizer, ensuring that their three-loss start from 1990β1991 won’t be repeated.
Forest will be frustrated to have given up that equalizer, but they now have four points from their first three games, which is a strong start for a freshly promoted team.
At the other end, three other Super Eagles stars – Joe Aribo, Wilfred Ndidi and Kelechi Iheanacho all featured in Southamptonβs away victory over Leicester City.
Southampton came from behind to secure their first victory of the campaign with a 2-1 victory over Leicester City and it was Adams Armstrong who had a standout performance, scoring both goals while as substitute.
While Wilfred Ndidi and Joe Aribo all got the game going from the first sound of the whistle, Kelechi Iheanacho came in as a second-half replacement for Barnes and played for just 14 minutes at the Kind Power Stadium.
The former Rangers star – Aribo, played for 88 minutes but was eventually substituted and replaced by Lyanco after failing to replicate his incredible performance against Leeds United.
Lyanco on for Joe Aribo for the final few minutes.

Just 55 minutes into the clash, a beautiful Maddison free-kick gave Leicester the lead. Southampton quickly responded, and Adams’ impact after coming off the bench helped Southampton win.
He scored the equalizer after 68 minutes before clinching all three points for the visitors with a spectacular effort in stoppage time.
With this victory, Southampton goes up to 12th and will play Manchester United the following weekend. Leicester will visit Chelsea in their next fixture as they continue to search for their first victory.
