The newly appointed Super Eagles head coach, Finidi George, has pledged to succeed in his new role with the support of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and soccer-loving Nigerians.
The 53-year-old’s appointment was confirmed by the NFF on Monday, and he expressed his delight, promising to give his best to make his stint successful, Footballrover reports.
“I am happy with my appointment as Super Eagles Head Coach, and I believe that with the support of the NFF and Nigerians, we shall achieve a lot,” Finidi said in a statement.
He added that he still needs to meet with the NFF to finalise details before a formal media chat.
Finidi’s immediate task is to ensure the Super Eagles qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
To strengthen Nigeria’s chances in the upcoming crucial qualifiers, he will kick off preparations with a training camp featuring home-based talents.
This approach marks a departure from the usual practice of opening camp just before major games with the arrival of foreign-based stars.
Nigeria faces South Africa and the Benin Republic in June on matchday three and four of the World Cup qualifying campaign in two crucial games.
The Super Eagles are under pressure to secure victories after starting the qualifying series with two disappointing draws against Lesotho and Zimbabwe in November.
They currently sit third in Group C with two points, behind Rwanda (four points) and South Africa (three points).
