Nigerian midfielder Bonke Innocent marked a rare achievement over the weekend, scoring his first goal of the season for Adanaspor in the TFF First League.
However, despite his efforts, it wasn’t enough to prevent his team from suffering a crushing 3-1 defeat at the hands of Boluspor in the Turkish league, Footballrover reports.
As their relegation battle intensifies, Adanaspor’s struggles continue, leaving them in a precarious position on the league table.
Bonke Innocent’s first goal of the season: A bright spot amid painful defeat
Bonke Innocent’s goal came in the 68th minute, offering a glimmer of hope for Adanaspor after they trailed 2-0.
The 28-year-old finally found the back of the net after 12 appearances and 864 minutes played in the season.
His effort was the third goal of the match at the Bolu Ataturk Stadium, but Adanaspor couldn’t capitalise on the momentum.
Boluspor quickly restored their two-goal advantage in the 73rd minute, securing a 3-1 victory.
Adanaspor had entered the match with renewed confidence following two consecutive wins over Yeni Malatyaspor and Genclerbirligi, plus a draw against Amedspor.
Unfortunately, their hopes of continuing this momentum were dashed early in the game.
Boluspor took the lead in the 39th minute when Jefferson converted a penalty, and just two minutes before halftime, Daniel Avramovski doubled their advantage.
Adanaspor’s relegation battle deepens: Can Bonke Innocent make a difference?
Despite a red card for Ghanaian defender Isaac Donkor in the 57th minute, Adanaspor fought back with Bonke Innocent’s effort.
However, their defensive frailties and inability to take their chance despite the numerical disadvantage left them vulnerable to Boluspor’s relentless attack.
The loss leaves Adanaspor languishing in 19th place on the table, with just 15 points from 19 games. They have won only three matches this season, losing ten.
With their next fixture against Erokspor on Saturday, the relegation battle looms large, and Adanaspor’s survival in the league may depend on whether Bonke Innocent and his teammates can turn their form around.
Recall that the forgotten Super Eagles star has made four appearances for Nigeria, including three in World Cup qualifiers and one in a friendly match.
