In a crucial NPFL Matchday 17 fixture at the Elephant Park, former league champions Enyimba FC ended their six-match winless streak with a 2-1 win over Nasarawa United.
This victory, fuelled by tactical changes under new head coach Stanley Eguma, marks an important moment in the Aba giants’ season as they aim to revive their championship credentials, footballrover reports.
Tactical masterclass sparks Enyimbaâs return to winning ways
Stanley Egumaâs arrival appears to have breathed new life into Enyimbaâs campaign.
The coach retained much of the lineup that defeated Black Bulls FC in a continental clash, with only Kalu Nweke replacing Fatai Abdullahi.
This consistency paid dividends as the People’s Elephant dominated possession and relentlessly tested Nasarawa Unitedâs defence.
The breakthrough came just before halftime when Joseph Atule converted a brilliant pass from Akani Elijah, sending the Aba crowd into celebration.
However, a defensive lapse early in the second half allowed Nasarawa’s top scorer, Anas Yusuf, to equalise.
Undeterred, Eguma introduced Brown Ideye, whose 60th-minute strike sealed the much-needed victory for Enyimba.
After the match, Eguma highlighted the teamâs rebuilding process as the cornerstone of their resurgence.
âIâm happy the players are giving me maximum cooperation. Since we began, we have been rebuilding, so it’s not yet uhuru; it’s not yet time for celebration. I think a lot has to be done in the team. I thank the management for giving me the opportunity to rebuild,” Eguma told journalists.
Building for sustained success
Eguma emphasised that Enyimbaâs return to winning ways is just the beginning of a larger project.
Acknowledging the squadâs injury struggles, he assured fans that efforts are underway to reintegrate key players and strengthen the team.
“The fans should trust the process. Weâve come to do the job and wonât let them down. They are hard-working and supportive, and weâll work hard to leave a good legacy,” Eguma said.
On the potential for reinforcements, the tactician stressed a focus on blending fresh tactics with the existing squad while remaining open to addressing gaps during the transfer window.
Despite their current position on the NPFL table, Eguma remains optimistic about Enyimbaâs title hopes, claiming that the league is still wide open with over 19 games left to play.
With back-to-back victories in both league and continental competitions, Enyimba got their heart on the title.
Their next challenge comes on Sunday in a CAF Confederations Cup tie against Al Masry of Egypt, where they aim to extend their winning streak.
Enyimbaâs faithful can now dare to dream, as Stanley Egumaâs blueprint begins to restore the clubâs storied legacy.
