It was indeed a huge display of resilience for Sporting Lagos Academy, who edged out Osters IF of Sweden 1-0 to book their place in the Gothia Cup semi-finals.
The Nigerian youngsters dominated possession but found the Swedes resolute in defence throughout the game, Footballrover reports.
Early Domination for Sporting Lagos
The game kicked off at a frenetic pace, with Sporting Lagos dictating play from the opening whistle.
A series of composed build-ups, however, failed to find the target.
Musa Akinfewa and Emmanuel both came close with efforts in the first 20 minutes but failed to hit the nail on the head.
Penalty Drama and Ishaq’s Heroics
The second half mirrored the first, with Sporting Lagos still in control of possession but struggling to convert their dominance.
A turning point arrived in the 50th minute when a penalty was awarded against the young Tech Boys.
However, a sensational save by goalkeeper Ebenezer kept the scores level, igniting a renewed wave of attacks from Sporting Lagos.
Late Winner Secures Semi-Final Berth
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 58th minute.
A long throw from the ever-reliable Tunde Akomolede found the head of Naziru Ishaq, who planted a beautiful header past the Osters’ goalkeeper to send the Nigerian fans into a ride of excitement.
Despite a late scare with a chance for Osters, Sporting Lagos held on for a remarkable victory.
