African Women’s Football Champions, Banyana Banyana of South Africa, will face the No. 1 ranked World Women’s Team, the United States of America women’s national team, in two International friendly matches to be played in Cincinnati and Chicago, USA.
The International friendly match was confirmed today, Saturday, July 15, 2023, by South African Football Association through SAFA.net.
The two matches will be played at TQL Stadium, Cincinnati, on September 21, 2023, and Soldier Field, Chicago, on September 24, 2023.
Speaking on the friendly match, the South African Women’s team Coach, Desiree Ellis, expressed excitement about the opportunity to play the number one-ranked Women’s football team in the world.
She acknowledged that it is really exciting news to get to play the U.S. women’s national team so soon after the World Cup.
She mentioned that they had played them twice before, in 2016 and in 2019, and now they were getting another opportunity to test themselves against the best, but this time as African champions.
She added that they are all looking forward to those two exciting encounters to show how much they had grown as a team.
She also expressed gratitude to SAFA and Sasol for once again providing them with quality opposition. However, she mentioned that, at present, they are concentrating on the World Cup.
The two national women’s teams will be participating in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, which will kick off on July 20, 2023.
The USA will be making its ninth appearance at the FIFA Women’s World Cup, while the South African team will be making their second appearance in the global football fiesta.
On her part, the Coach of the USA, Vlatko Andonovski, said that the focus right now is, of course, on the World Cup, but getting two great matches in their first games back in the USA in two stadiums that were really fun to play would be awesome for their players and the fans.
She admitted that South Africa had talented players, so she was sure that those would be two entertaining games.
