Desiree Ellis, the coach of the South Africa senior women’s team, Banyana Banyana, has announced the final squad of 23 players for the upcoming 2023 Women’s World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand.
Banyana Banyana: 23-Player Squad Revealed for 2023 Women’s World Cup
The selected squad comprises of 3 goalkeepers, 7 defenders, 6 midfielders, and 7 forwards, with one standout player being Thembi Kgatlana, a renowned South African women’s football star.
Additionally, the squad includes three standby players, bringing the total number of players to 26.
Notably, 6 players from the esteemed South African women’s club, Mamelodi Sundowns Women FC, have made it into the final squad.
These players are Andile Dlamini (goalkeeper), Karabo Dlamini, Lebohang Ramalepe, Bambanani Mbane, Thsetso Makhubela (defenders), and Melinda Khagiate.
Two weeks ago, the Nigerian women’s team, the Super Falcons, also revealed their team roster for the tournament.
Both sides are determined to represent the African continent at the highest level and make their mark in the competition.
The 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup is scheduled to be held from July 20 to August 20, 2023.
This edition will feature an expanded format of 32 teams, up from the previous 24, following the same structure as the men’s World Cup from 1998 to 2022.
