Gbenga Ogunbote, head coach of Shooting Stars, remains optimistic about his team’s chances of securing a continental spot despite a 1-0 loss to Rivers United in their NPFL matchday 35 clash.
Rivers United forward Nyima Nwagua scored the winning goal in the 51st minute, securing maximum points for the Port Harcourt team, Footballrover reports.
The forward capitalised on a precise cross from Kazie Enyinnaya, following a skillful setup by Mark Gibson Theo.
This narrow victory earned the Port Harcourt Boys crucial points in their Nigeria Premier Football League matchday 35 clash at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium.
While the loss was a setback for the Oluyole Warriors, who are vying for a top-three finish to secure continental football, Ogunbote remains confident.
The 3SC insists that their continental aspirations are far from over.
“We’ll keep fighting until the end,” he said.
Despite the defeat, Shooting Stars still occupy fourth place with 57 points, just two points behind Remo Stars in third.
With three games remaining, Ogunbote believes his team can still achieve its objective.
Speaking to the team’s media, he emphasised the importance of perseverance.
“We have two home games and one away game, just like every other team. The important thing is, until it is over, it is not over,” Ogunbote stated.
He stressed the need to regroup and focus on the remaining fixtures, hoping to amass the points necessary to achieve their goal.
Shooting Stars will next face off against long-time rivals Rangers at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Adamasingba, Ibadan, on Wednesday.
