Shola Abdulraheem, the midfield maestro who orchestrated Kwara United’s crucial victory over Sunshine Stars, has revealed how belief and paid bonuses paved the way for an important victory for the team.
After seven long weeks of frustration, Kwara United finally returned to winning ways in emphatic fashion, edging Sunshine Stars 1-0 at the Kwara State Stadium on Saturday, Footballrover reports.
The Harmony Boys were desperate to break their winless streak, having drawn three and lost four of their previous seven NPFL matches.
But spurred on by a raucous home crowd, they put in a determined performance, dominating the game and finding the net early through Emmanuel Ogbole.

The visitors struggled to create clear chances, ultimately succumbing to Kwara’s resolute defence.
Shola Abdulraheem, who was awarded the Man of the Match award for his tireless work in midfield, had this to say.
“We were determined, and we made a promise to try and score in the first 15 minutes. Which we did.“
Abdulraheem, who spoke exclusively to Footballrover, credited the resilience of the team during their recent struggles while revealing how paid bonuses spurred them to success.
“The coaches kept us going; they never gave up on us. The management too believed we could do it; they also paid some of our outstanding bonuses, which motivated the players.”
When asked about the key factors behind Kwara United’s win despite recent struggles, Shola Abdulraheem attributed it not to specific changes but to the team’s sheer determination and hunger for victory.
He emphasised that the same players, driven by a desperate desire to break the winless streak, ultimately secured the crucial result.
Reflecting on Kwara United’s hard-fought win, Shola Abdulraheem expressed his delight at both Kwara United’s crucial victory and his own significant contribution, which earned him the Man of the Match award.
The win has lifted the mood in the Kwara camp, with the victory resonating beyond the squad.
“Honestly speaking, not only the camp, but the whole state is happy with our last performance,” admitted Abdulraheem.
Looking ahead, Abdulraheem is confident that Kwara can build on this momentum.
“I will keep trying my best for the team. We need to be focused, and most especially, we should be determined and more hungry for victory.”
Kwara United’s next challenge comes against relegation battling side Heartland on matchday 20.
