Super Eagles star Kelechi Iheanacho, a player well-known for his attacking prowess, has recently found himself in unfamiliar territory, sparking debates over his most effective role.
Sevilla head coach García Pimienta has weighed in on the matter, particularly after Iheanacho’s performances for Nigeria during the 2025 AFCON qualifiers, Footballrover reports.
Pimienta’s remarks have cast a spotlight on the forward’s deployment by Nigerian coach Austin Eguavoen, raising questions about whether he is being utilised to his full potential.
Eguavoen stationed Kelechi on the flanks in Nigeria’s games against Benin and Rwanda, experimenting with his versatility.
Pimienta on Iheanacho’s natural position
Against Benin, the Super Eagles operated in a 3-4-3 formation, where Kelechi took up the right wing.
A similar role awaited him in a 4-3-3 setup against Rwanda. While Nigeria managed to secure qualification for the AFCON with a 1-1 draw against Benin, their campaign ended on a sour note following a 2-1 defeat to Rwanda in Uyo.
Ahead of Sevilla’s La Liga showdown with Rayo Vallecano, Pimienta addressed the media regarding his squad’s setup.
When asked about Iheanacho’s versatility, the coach admitted that while the Nigerian forward performed admirably in an unfamiliar role, it is not where he excels.
According to Pimienta, who was quoted by Sevilla’s official website,
“We have Lukebakio, Jesús, Suso. Isra has got a shoulder injury. Iheanacho played there in the last match and did well despite it not being his natural position. We can use Peque or Barco.
“We can adapt to play differently depending on who plays. We are not going to make excuses, and whoever plays will contribute.”
These statements highlight a broader concern about Iheanacho’s recent form as he continues to navigate the challenges of adapting to different positions for both club and country.
Despite the scepticism surrounding his role, the Super Eagles forward remains determined to shine in upcoming matches.
The forward has publicly emphasised that his strengths lie in operating as an attacking midfielder or a traditional number 10, roles that allow him to dictate play and exploit spaces effectively.
As Sevilla prepares for their clash against Rayo Vallecano, one would hope to see the forward tested in these areas of the pitch.
