Rivers Angels’ incredible FA Cup comeback wasn’t just a fluke—it was a story of belief, grit, and divine grace, as revealed by their right-back Sandra John in an exclusive chat with Footballrover.

From two goals down to lifting their 10th Federation Cup title, this final was a true test of character. And Sandra? She was right in the thick of it.
‘2-0 is Nothing’ – The Words That Sparked a Turnaround
When Nasarawa Amazons scored twice in the first 20 minutes through Shola Shobowale, the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos was stunned.
Rivers Angels looked down and out. But according to Sandra, belief never left their coach and their dressing room.

– “He’s a coach that believes in his capabilities. He told us, ‘2-0 is nothing. Go there, score the first one, score the second goal, and if you can’t get the third goal, never mind; we will win it in the penalty kick,’ and it really worked for us, to be honest.”
Sandra was confident throughout. When asked about the win, she said:
– “I felt overwhelmed; it’s a great achievement for me in my football career because I was part of the squad that won the last year own, it’s a thing of joy for me seeing myself playing in FA Cup Finals back to back.”
Sandra John Reflects on the Comeback, Assist, and Faith
The second half was electric. Taiwo Ajibade’s goal in the 57th minute was the spark. Then Taiwo Afolabi completed the comeback—and Sandra played a direct role in the equaliser.

– “Actually, I am the one that made the pullout that got the equaliser for us; I felt great in contributing to the equaliser for my team. One of my best assists this season.”
Despite the early deficit, Sandra said the mood was never hopeless.
– “This is football; we never give up. Though after the first half, we encouraged ourselves to fight for each other’s mistakes, and at the end we got unbelievable results.”
And what made the difference?
– “God’s grace and our hard work under rain and sun to win this special trophy because we lost the Super 6 trophy; all our focus was on the FA Cup trophy, and we promised ourselves to end the season with good success.”

She rated the final this way:
– “The first half was not a better one for us, but in the second half we are up for the task of lifting the trophy.”
What Comes Next for Sandra and Rivers Angels?
With back-to-back FA Cup wins and a memorable season behind them, Sandra John is filled with gratitude—and hope.

– “I’m grateful to God Almighty for this achievement. At this point I can’t say anything for now, but I’m trusting God for the new plans he has for me.”
On whether she dreams of playing abroad:
– “This question is so difficult for me to answer. But I believe God has better plans for me.”
To the loyal Rivers Angels fans:
– “We really appreciate those prayers and support from the beginning of this season till the final moments in Lagos; we will continue to give our best to our fans.”

As for she and her teammates heading into the new season?
– “Better outcome this season.”
