After a long wait of 311 days without a goal, Super Eagles star Sadiq Umar has finally found the back of the net, guiding Valencia to a vital 2-0 win over Ourense.
His impressive performance came on his full debut for the club, ending a lengthy scoring drought that had plagued him since his recovery from a serious knee injury, Footballrover reports.
Sadiq Umar’s 311-day scoring drought comes to an exciting end
The Nigerian forward’s goal on Tuesday marked his first since March 2024, when he last scored for Real Sociedad.
Despite a difficult spell at the club, where he struggled with limited playing time and often played second fiddle, Umar has now repaid the faith shown in him by his new boss.
Just five minutes into the second half, an unfortunate own goal from Ourense’s Fran Carmona handed Valencia the lead.
Umar doubled the advantage in the 73rd minute, receiving a precise assist from Sergi Canos to seal the game.
While the 27-year-old could have added more goals, hitting the woodwork and registering four shots, his goal was enough to help Valencia secure progression to the next round of the Copa del Rey.
Umar’s return to scoring is a significant boost for him, and with the win, Valencia extended their unbeaten run to three games.
Valencia’s next challenge: Maintaining momentum
Looking ahead, Valencia’s victory has given them momentum, and the team will be hoping to continue their strong form, with a crucial match against Umar’s parent club Real Sociedad scheduled for Sunday.
As Sadiq Umar continues to regain his rhythm, his 311-day scoring drought is now a thing of the past.
