Jean Philippe Mateta was the hero of the day at Selhurst Park after he handed Crystal Palace’s new manager, Roy Hodgson, his first home victory during their English Premier League clash vs Leicester City.
The match had been deadlocked at 1-1 until the fourth minute of second-half extra time, when Jordan Ayew produced a moment of brilliance to help the home team grab the winner and all three points.
The Ghanaian International floated a superb drive to an unmarked Jean Philippe Mateta, who wove through two Leicester City defenders before releasing a bullet for Crystal Palace’s winning goal.
Ricardo Pereira had earlier given Leicester City the lead in the 56th minute of the second half, much to the bewilderment of the home fans.
Palace had complete control of the first half despite failing to score, and Leicester punished them by taking the lead thanks to a powerful goal from substitute Pereira.
However, Palace equalized nearly immediately as the excellent Eze’s free-kick bounced off of Foxes goalkeeper Iversen and into the net.

The shocking goal arrived in the 59th minute of the second half, Daniel Iversen’s own-goal leveled the scores (1-1) for Crystal Palace.
After exchanging blows for the remainder of the half, Eagles super-sub Mateta grabbed a wonderful pass from Ayew to score in the last seconds of extra time.
Mateta’s winning goal at the very end was just a tremendous reward for the Roy Hodgson team, who dominated for significant stretches of the game and earned their first victory of 2023.
The 2-1 home victory against Leicester City has lifted Crystal Palace to the 12th position in the Premier League table with 30 points after 29 matches.
