Benin Republic head coach Gernot Rohr has hinted at what he believes is a crucial factor keeping the Super Eagles at the top of Group D in the race for Africa Cup of Nations qualification.
With only a few games left in the campaign, Rohr pointed out how Nigeria’s home-field advantage has helped the Super Eagles surge ahead in the standings, Footballrover reports.
Heading into matchday five, Nigeria sits comfortably at the top of Group D with ten points, having won three games and drawn one, while Benin trails with six points.
Meanwhile, Rwanda follows close with five points. While Nigeria’s path has remained undefeated, Benin’s journey has been more challenging, with two losses and two wins.
Rohr highlights Benin’s home disadvantage in Group D standings
One obstacle facing Benin is the lack of a home advantage. Due to their stadiums not meeting CAF standards, the Cheetahs have been forced to adopt the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium in Abidjan as a neutral “home” ground.
This restriction has left them without a true home crowd boost in their AFCON qualifiers.
Rohr noted that, unlike their rivals Nigeria and Rwanda, Benin hasn’t had the benefit of familiar turf in this crucial campaign.
“In our group, the three countries that are with us have all had the chance to be able to play at home. It’s not like us who have to go to neutral ground. Up until now, it has given us the chance to play in Abidjan, and we will want to continue,” the coach said, as quoted by megasportsmedia.
Despite this, Rohr remains hopeful about Benin’s prospects. He believes the final match against Libya in Tripoli will be decisive for his team’s qualification chances.
Prepared to face this challenge, he shared that his squad is building the mentality and rhythm needed to secure victory and qualify for AFCON 2025 in Morocco.
On Monday, Benin’s Cheetahs commenced their training session in Abidjan, with nearly all invited players ready to give their best in the upcoming clash against the Super Eagles.
