Youths in Rivers State are urging Governor Siminalayi Fubara to revive the defunct Sharks FC, citing its potential to create jobs, reduce crime, and boost youth development.
In a statement addressed to the Governor, Prince Worlu, media officer of Ereme FC, commended the recent recognition of athletes by the state government, Footballrover reports.
However, he emphasised the need to prioritise investments in human capital and sports infrastructure.
Sharks FC’s Revival: Employment and Crime Reduction
The central demand revolves around the re-establishment of Sharks FC.
Youths believe this will generate employment opportunities in various capacities, from club management to coaching.
His statement highlighted the presence of experienced coaches like Imama Amapakabo and Kennedy Boboye, who could contribute significantly.
The statement further emphasised the role of philanthropists like Mr. Jackson Ereme, who has invested heavily in youth football development in the state.
Prince Worlu believes government support for such individuals would further enhance youth engagement and potentially reduce crime rates, drawing parallels between athletic pursuits and responsible behaviour.
Yakubu Gowon Stadium Renovation: A Pressing Need
The statement also calls for the renovation of Yakubu Gowon Stadium.
Youths argue that its central location makes it ideal for fan accessibility, eliminating the need to travel to Akwa Ibom for continental fixtures.
Renovating the stadium will not only create a welcoming environment for supporters, but it could also bring in revenue for the state.
Applauding Existing Efforts and Looking Forward
The statement acknowledged the recent promotion of young players from the Rivers United FC feeder team, highlighting it as a positive step.
It also expressed appreciation for the recognition of athletes by the government.
