Rivers United earned a 1-0 win away from home as they beat Kano Pillars in the Nigeria Professional Football League thanks to Nyima Nwagua’s goal.
The lively attacker made the best of sloppy play from Pillars goalkeeper Idris Ibrahim to clinch victory for Stanley Eguma’s team on a bright and sunny afternoon at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kaduna.
Rivers United got out to a faster start than the Pillars, with Ishaq Kayode’s deadly low ball troubling the Pillars goal and forcing Ibrahim into action.

The hosts used their threats cautiously and Saidu Salisu came close to scoring from a corner, before Sochima Victor saved a Rabiu Ali shot.
The Sai Masu Gida side had more chances in the second half than in the first, with Sochima Victor forced to make a save to deny Rabiu Ali’s powerful strike.
The game-winner arrived in the 70th minute, when former Kano Pillars attacker Nyima Nwagua took advantage of the goalkeeper’s gaffe to slot in the game-winner.
As Salisu Yusuf’s team struggled to claw their way back into the game, resentment increased in the stands.
Despite late pressure and a number of forced anxious moments, the Pride of Rivers’ back four of Kazie Eyinnaya, Ebube Duru, Fabian Nworie, and player of the match – Dennis Ndasi held steady against waves of Pillars attack.
Another game…
