Ebube Duru’s goal in the second half proved to be decisive as it ensured the defending champions secured maximum points and claimed the top spot in the NPFL Championship play-off (Super 6) currently taking place at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos state.
The left full-back confidently converted a penalty, sending Sunshine Stars goalkeeper Mustapha Lawal the opposite way from 12 yards. The penalty was awarded after Mark Gibson Theo was fouled inside the box.
In the second half, United goalkeeper Sochima Victor made an impressive full-stretch save to deny Sunshine Stars an equalizer.
Despite facing late pressure from the opposition, the Port Harcourt outfit held firm and managed to secure the crucial three points, allowing them to climb to the summit of the table.
After the match, Rivers United coach Stanley Eguma expressed his admiration for both teams’ efforts, highlighting the importance of tactical adjustments in securing the crucial victory.
Speaking in a post-match interview, Eguma said;
“I commend the two teams for the effort they put in. We had played Sunshine Stars in the past, two times, and we know their character, we know their game. So, we had to make some tactical adjustments as we played them today, and I think that’s what gave us the win.”
Next up, Rivers United will face Remo Stars at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena on Monday, June 5th, 2023, with kick-off scheduled for 4:30 pm.
One thing is certain: Coach Stanley Eguma and his squad will continue to rely on their tactical acumen and determination as they strive for further victories in their quest for glory.
