Rivers United coach Stanley Eguma shared his thoughts on Remo Stars’ performance in the recent Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) showdown, summing it up as “they tried.”
The coach expressed his views after his team, the Pride of Rivers, convincingly defeated the visiting Sky Blue Stars 2-0 in a rescheduled NPFL matchday one fixture at the Adokiye Amiesimaka stadium.
The Port Harcourt team secured their victory with two goals, one from Alex Oyowah’s penalty kick and another from Andy Okpe’s powerful strike, Footballrover reports
These goals, scored in each half, showcased the talent of their two new summer signings.
However, Rivers United goalkeeper deserves all the praises for his heroic performance, making over seven crucial saves to deny Remo Stars any scoring opportunities.
Coach Eguma acknowledged that Remo Stars posed a challenge, but he was prepared to counter their tactics, even bringing in Andy Okpe, who wasn’t initially in the lineup.
Coach Eguma commended his players for their dedication and hard work during the game and also praised their opponents for putting up a strong fight, claiming that “they tried”.
“Well, was a good game, my players rose to the occasion despite all the journey that we made within this period. I think I’ll commend their effort, because they really lived up to expectations,” he said.
Eguma added;
“I also want to commend our opponents, they gave us a good fight. They held possession for a very long time. We got them on the counter and neutralised their tactics. I commend their effort and the game they played, they tried but we had answers to their tactics.”
Stanley Eguma couldn’t contain his excitement over his team’s first win of the season, believing it will boost their morale and confidence. He emphasized that this victory will help them prepare for their upcoming match against Kwara United.
“It was a good one for us, the first win of the season. It has really lightened the spirit of my team having lost the first match in Kaduna against Tornadoes. This win will fire us up waiting for the next game against Kwara United.“
With this victory behind them, the former NPFL champions are now preparing to host Kwara United at the Adokiye Amiesimaka stadium in what promises to be another exciting match.
