Rivers United Captain Nyima Nwagua has openly revealed the team’s target after knowing their fate during the recent CAF Confederation Cup Draw, where his team was placed in Group C.
Reacting to the draw, which took place on Friday at the studios of Supersport TV in South Africa, the new captain of the Pride of Rivers expressed optimism ahead of the Group C opening clash while describing the draw as “fair”.
“I’ll say this is a fair grouping for us. I’m not underrating any side here; we could have gotten something different,” he told the club media.
Nwagua acknowledged that every team in this stage deserves respect and shouldn’t be underestimated, emphasizing the competitiveness of the group.
“One thing in football is that any team in this group stage is not a team to write off, and everybody in the group wants to go further. But right now, this is Rivers United, and we are concentrating on the team alone; we are focused,” he said.
Nyima Nwagua has now set his sights on leading his club to the group stage of the CAF Cup, and he’s full of confidence they can make it through while revealing the team’s target in the upcoming continental tournament.
“Now that the draws are out, our target right now is how we’ll get past our previous records and go further than where we are now. So, the team is focused, and right now we are building towards how we would leave the group stage on a very good slate. By the special grace of God, I know we will make it through,” Nyima Nwagua said.
The Stanley Eguma side will compete in Group C alongside Tunisian giants Club Africain, Dreams FC from Ghana, and Academica do Lobito from Angola.
The NPFL side secured their spot in the competition by defeating Etoile Filante de Quagadougou with a 2-0 aggregate score during the preliminary stage.
