Rivers United head coach – Stanley Eguma has praised his team’s 2-0 victory over Shooting Stars in the Nigerian Professional Football League match.
According to the manager, his team put in a lot of pressure to achieve those early goals, and that’s exactly what they wanted before the game.
Rivers United defeated Shooting Stars 2-0 on matchday 17 of the NPFL game played at the Adokiye Amiesimaka on Sunday, with Joseph Onoja scoring a brace.
Following a beautiful play by Chiamaka Madu, the agile midfielder received the ball on the left side before darting inside and firing past Shooting Stars goalkeeper Dare Dede.
Onoja scored the game’s first goal with a spectacular finish before securing victory in the 25th minute with a half-volley.
The Port Harcourt Boys increased their lead when sturdy defender – Denis Ndasi’s pass from a cross reached Joseph Onoja, who scored with a half-volley.
For the rest of the first half, Stanley Eguma’s team went on to dominate.
After a more robust Shooting Stars side returned from the halftime break but the game drifted away from the visitors just as they seemed to have United spooked.
βIts was a good outing once again scoring two goals. It wasn’t an easy one. We had dominance of the game especially in the first half. We did a lot of pressing to get us those early goals in the game and that’s how we planned it”- Coach Stanley Eguma said.
Rivers United now has 38 points after 17 games, keeping the Wike boys at the top of the NPFL standings.
On Sunday, March 13th, 2022, Rivers United will travel to Gombe to face Gombe United.
