It all went down at the Akure Township Stadium, where Rivers Angels claimed a crucial victory against Sunshine Queens, securing a potential spot in the Super Six of the Nigeria Women Football League Premiership.Β
Peace Effiong’s decisive 42nd-minute goal proved to be the difference between the two sides, as Rivers Angels edged past their opponents in a tightly contested match, Footballrover reports.
The young starlet, displaying remarkable skill and composure, capitalised on Polinus Ifeoma’s free-kick to score her third goal of the season, giving Rivers Angels the lead in the first half.
Despite Sunshine Queens’ relentless efforts, goalkeeper Morufat Ademola’s crucial save denied them an equaliser in the second half.
Although the PH Ladies thought they had doubled their lead with Ifeoma Ikenokwalu’s goal in the 60th minute, it was disallowed by the referee.
However, Chiamaka Okwuchukwu’s introduction in the 70th minute injected fresh energy into the team, posing a constant threat to Sunshine Queens’ defence.
Following the hard-fought victory, Head Coach Whyte Ogbonda expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance, acknowledging the support and motivation provided by the Rivers State government.

Ogbonda emphasised the significance of the win, especially after their previous disappointment against Edo Queens.
“The team was well motivated before we left Port Harcourt for this match, and the motivation went a long way towards ensuring we got the three points at stake today,” he revealed.
Despite securing their spot in the Super Six, Coach Ogbonda stressed the importance of maintaining focus and determination in their upcoming matches.
He affirmed their commitment to securing another crucial victory against Bayelsa Queens in their next fixture on April 17th in Port Harcourt.
“For now, it’s a done deal for us that we are in the Super Six, but that does not mean we are going to relax; we have to go back home and ensure we get our three points against Bayelsa Queens,” he said.
With their eyes set on further success, the Jewel of Rivers are poised to continue their pursuit of excellence in the Nigeria Women Football League Premiership.
