Remo Stars’ hopes of a continental breakthrough have been dashed once again after succumbing to a 2-0 defeat against AS FAR of Morocco, eliminating them from the CAF Champions League.
The Nigeria Premier Football League side were knocked out in the first preliminary round after falling to a 2-3 aggregate loss despite winning the first leg 2-1 in Ikenne on August 18, Footballrover reports.
In a tightly contested match in Rabat, the Nigerian side held their own throughout a goalless first half, despite facing relentless pressure from the Moroccan hosts.
However, the second half proved decisive. Joel Beya, who had scored AS FAR’s lone goal in the first leg, broke the deadlock in the 53rd minute, giving the home side a crucial lead.
With Remo Stars struggling to find a response, their fate was completely sealed in the 78th minute when the referee awarded a controversial penalty against Ifeanyi Anaemena, who was claimed to have pulled down an opponent inside the box.
El Amine Zouhzouh stepped up and calmly converted the spot-kick, securing AS FAR’s progress, leaving Remo Stars with nothing but to reflect on another missed opportunity.

This latest setback extends Remo Stars’ winless run in continental competitions, having now lost all three ties in their history.
Their elimination also means that two of Nigeria’s representatives in continental club football have exited early this year.
On Saturday, El-Kanemi Warriors were also knocked out of the African Confederation Cup after a 2-3 aggregate loss in their first preliminary round tie.
Nigeria’s hopes in continental competitions now rest on Enugu Rangers in the Champions League and Enyimba in the Confederation Cup, with both clubs carrying the nation’s flag forward in the tournaments.
