The game at Stadion Grünfeld exploded out of the blocks with Albian Ajeti putting the visitors ahead in the very first minute, but Florian Kamberi hit back quickly for Rapperswil-Jona six minutes later.

The home side then shocked Basel again when Rijad Saliji made it 2-1 in the 19th minute.

In the second half, the visiting side took full control. Bénie Traoré converted a penalty in the 48th minute to put Basel back ahead before Kevin Carlos scored the final goal in the 71st minute to seal the hard-fought away win.

Philip Otele’s story with Basel keeps getting better.

The 20-time Swiss Super League champions finally signed the Nigerian forward on a permanent deal — and he’s already showing they made the right choice.

Before now, Otele impressed everyone during a standout loan spell at Basel. He joined the club in January after moving on loan from UAE Pro League side Al Wahda.

The 26-year-old forward wasted no time settling in. He racked up 14 goal contributions in just 21 matches across all competitions.

His nine goals and five assists were crucial for Basel. They helped the club secure a domestic double, finishing 10 points clear at the top of the Super League.

Otele also featured in the Swiss Cup final where Basel defeated Biel-Bienne 4-1 at the Wankdorf Stadium on June 1.

Thanks to his brilliant form, Basel triggered their option to buy him from the UAE Pro League team for around €3 million. He’s now tied to the club at St. Jakob-Park until the summer of 2028.

With this move, Basel continues its tradition of signing top Nigerian talent.
