Hamburg new man Philip Otele has shared the words he received that has help shape his Bundesliga debut, following an impressive first outing in Germany’s top flight against Heidenheim.
The Nigerian attacker made an instant impact after his winter loan move from Basel, helping Hamburg claim a crucial 2–0 victory, Footballrover reports.
Philip Otele explains advice behind his Bundesliga debut
The 26-year-old featured for 68 minutes as Hamburg secured their first league win of the year.
Operating as the club’s most dangerous attacker, Otele registered three shots on target and provided the assist for Ransford Königsdörffer’s opening goal deep into first-half added time.
Reflecting on the advice he received from head coach Merlin Polzin and his staff before kickoff, Otele explained the clarity of the message delivered to him.
“I’ve always wanted to play in the Bundesliga. The coaches told me what to do. I should stay connected, push forward, and show my strengths. The most important message was that I should enjoy myself.”
The instructions paid off immediately, as Otele played with confidence and purpose in his Bundesliga debut against Heidenheim.
Otele shares preparation steps before joining Hamburg
Otele also revealed that his decision to join Hamburg was carefully considered. Before completing his move from Basel, the Nigerian forward sought insight from other players and studied the club closely.
“I spoke with many players. They all had only positive things to say. I watched a few YouTube videos of the team. And videos of the fans. That’s when I thought: Okay, this seems like a really great club.”
That early research appears to have eased his transition, with Otele quickly settling into life at Hamburg and responding positively to the trust shown in him.
Previously named in Nigeria’s provisional AFCON 2025 squad before missing the final selection, Otele will now look to build a strong Bundesliga career as he continues his journey with Hamburg.
