Southampton’s struggles in the Premier League continue, but one bright spot emerged in their latest defeat, Paul Onuachu, who found the net late in the game, sparking brief hope of a comeback.
However, his effort wasn’t enough to prevent another painful loss for the Saints, Footballrover reports.
Meanwhile, his international future with the Super Eagles remains uncertain despite his latest goal.
Paul Onuachu’s third goal of the season offers brief hope
Facing Wolverhampton Wanderers at St Mary’s Stadium, Southampton fell behind early as Jørgen Strand Larsen struck twice, putting Wolves 2-0 up by the 47th minute.
Paul Onuachu, introduced at halftime, capitalised on a rebound in the 75th minute—reacting quickly after Tyler Dibling’s shot hit the post—to reduce the deficit.
Despite Onuachu’s effort, Southampton couldn’t find an equaliser.
The result leaves them rooted to the bottom of the table with just nine points, while Wolves sit 17th on 26 points.
Joe Aribo also featured for 90 minutes before being substituted late in the game.
Onuachu’s international future in doubt
Despite his recent goal-scoring form, Onuachu has been excluded from Nigeria’s final 23-man squad for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe.
Initially named in a 39-man provisional squad by coach Eric Chelle, he failed to make the final cut.
His omission isn’t surprising, as he has struggled to secure a consistent place in the Super Eagles squad in recent years.
While his height and finishing ability remain an asset, other strikers have been preferred.
With Nigeria set to continue their World Cup qualifying campaign, Onuachu must maintain his club form to earn another chance at international football.
