Super Eagles striker Paul Onuachu has opened up about his FIFA Puskás Award nomination, an honour reserved for the most spectacular goal of the year.
Reflecting on his journey, Onuachu attributed his success to an incredible chapter of his career at Trabzonspor, where he says he experienced “wonderful days” fuelled by the massive support of the club’s passionate fans, footballrover reports.
The towering forward earned the nomination for his stunning acrobatic backheel goal against Konyaspor last season, a strike that not only clinched a 2-1 victory in the dying minutes but also showed his flair for extraordinary finishes.
The jaw-dropping moment has drawn comparisons to some of Zlatan Ibrahimović’s legendary goals.
Paul Onuachu, Puskas nominee: A goal that captivated the world
In an interview quoted by Turkish media outlet 61saat, Onuachu shared his gratitude, saying,
“I had wonderful days there. I always felt the incredible support of the fans. Their contribution to my success is great.”
The competition for the Puskás Award is fierce, with Onuachu’s goal vying against remarkable strikes by Mohammed Kudus and Alejandro Garnacho.
However, his spectacular finish continues to garner attention worldwide, giving Trabzonspor fans hopes that their former talisman could claim the prestigious honour.
Despite his glowing success in Turkey, Paul Onuachu’s career hasn’t been without setbacks.
After a standout season at Trabzonspor, where he scored 17 goals and registered four assists in 25 games, the striker has endured a difficult spell at Southampton.
Joining the Premier League side in January 2023, Onuachu failed to find the net in 12 appearances, leading to a season-long loan back to Trabzonspor.
Currently back with Southampton, the 30-year-old faces an uncertain future. While Trabzonspor have expressed a strong desire to bring him back home permanently.
