Super Eagles star, Victor Osimhen has continued to shine in his new playmaking role for Galatasaray, setting a personal assist record during their 3-1 Europa League victory over PAOK on Wednesday night.
Osimhen’s impact in the second half
In his third consecutive start for the Turkish champions, Osimhen’s influence was felt just minutes into the second half, Footballrover reports.
He rose high to meet a corner from Dries Mertens, with his powerful header deflecting off former Chelsea defender Abdul Rahman Baba, resulting in an own goal that handed Galatasaray the lead.
Though PAOK quickly responded with a goal from Giannis Konstantelias, Osimhen wasn’t done making his mark.
His clever assist in the 75th minute found Yunus Akgün, who calmly slotted the ball past the PAOK keeper, restoring Galatasaray’s advantage.
A personal milestone for Osimhen
This assist marked Osimhen’s third consecutive game creating a goal, a personal milestone that he had never achieved in his professional club career before.
According to OPTA stats, Osimhen is currently enjoying his most productive playmaking form, having provided assists in each of his last three outings.
He set up a goal on his Galatasaray debut against Rizespor and followed that up with another crucial assist in the fierce Intercontinental Derby against Fenerbahce last weekend.
Although the Nigerian star is still searching for his first goal this season, he came agonisingly close to breaking the drought.
His header in the first half just missed the target, and a powerful shot in the 63rd minute was denied by PAOK’s goalkeeper, Dominik Kotarski.
Osimhen’s dynamic display was capped when he was subbed off in the 78th minute, making way for Mauro Icardi.
His new role as a creative force is proving just as impactful as his goal-scoring ability, obviously there is more to come.
