Suat Umurhan, a prominent figure in Turkish football, recently highlighted the growing influence of star players like Mauro Icardi and Victor Osimhen on young fans in Turkey.
Speaking about his experience at a local school, Umurhan observed that 7 out of 10 children playing football in the yard had Galatasaray jerseys, with most of them bearing Icardi’s name on the back, Footballrover reports.
Umurhan pointed out that Icardi has played a significant role in attracting a new generation of fans to the club.
However, the football figure suggested that the club’s appeal would take another leap if they retained the services of Osimhen, who is currently on a season-long loan at Galatasaray from Napoli.
Victor Osimhen’s growing influence: A new era for Galatasaray fans
Osimhen’s loan move to Galatasaray, the club has already seen a surge in attention from both local and international fans, especially given the striker’s reputation.
Suat Umurhan said in a video shared by Aspor,
“I went to school to pick up my children; 7 out of 10 children playing football in the yard had Galatasaray jerseys. Most of them had Icardi written on their backs. Icardi is a figure that makes young children Galatasaray fans. If you also keep Osimhen, this goes somewhere else.”
The Nigerian forward Victor Osimhen has quickly established himself as a key figure since joining the Turkish giants on a season-long loan from Napoli in September.
With eight goals and four assists in just nine appearances across all competitions, Osimhen’s contributions have been instrumental in the club’s strong performances this season.
The 25-year-old forward has settled into his new environment seamlessly, becoming a fan favourite in the process.
His playmaking ability and team-orientated mindset have also earned him praise from several Turkish pundits.
His performances in both the Süper Lig and UEFA Europa League have helped the team maintain a competitive edge, especially after the untimely injury to star striker Mauro Icardi.
Icardi, who was also a fan favourite, had been a crucial part of the team’s attack but was sidelined with a torn cruciate ligament, leaving a void in Galatasaray’s attacking line.
Now, with Icardi out, all hopes are on Osimhen to lead the Yellow and Reds to glory.
His impressive goal-scoring form and leadership on the pitch make him the focal point of the team as they navigate through a crucial period of the season.
The club’s hopes for success now rest firmly on the shoulders of the reigning African Footballer of the Year.
