Orji Okwonkwo and his Cittadella teammates looked destined for a crucial away victory, but a late collapse saw them surrender a two-goal lead to Cremonese in a dramatic 2-2 draw.
The former Nigerian youth international delivered a standout performance, registering a goal and assist, yet it wasn’t enough to secure all three points in this exciting Serie B encounter, Footballrover reports.
Orji Okwonkwo sparks Cittadella’s fast start
The visitors took control at Stadio Giovanni Zini, with Orji Okwonkwo making an immediate impact.
In the 38th minute, the Nigerian forward showed off his sharp finishing by slotting home the opening goal, putting Cittadella ahead.
Just moments into the second half, Okwonkwo turned provider. His well-timed assist in the 46th minute set up Simone Rabbi, who doubled the advantage, seemingly putting Cittadella in a commanding position.
However, the tide would soon turn against them.
Okwonkwo was substituted in the 55th minute for Jacopo Desogus, and from that moment, Cittadella struggled to hold their grip on the match.
Cremonese’s stunning comeback steals the show
The hosts found a lifeline in the 73rd minute when Mattia Valati pulled one back, putting the visitors on a tight angle.
Just two minutes later, Charles Pickel delivered the crushing blow, equalising in the 75th minute with an assist from Dennis Tørset Johnsen.
Despite Okwonkwo’s impressive display, Cittadella had to settle for a point in a game they once dominated.
The draw leaves them with just one win in their last six outings, sitting 14th in the table with 34 points from 31 games.
On a brighter note, Orji Okwonkwo, on loan from Bologna, earned Man of the Match honours with a stellar rating of 8.1.
The 27-year-old now boasts two goals and one assist in 20 appearances for Cittadella this season.
Up next, they face Carrarese as they continue their fight to climb the Serie B standings. Can Okwonkwo inspire them to victory this time?
