Former Lazio midfielder Ogenyi Onazi has made it clear he hasn’t closed the door on his international career.
Despite being out of the Super Eagles squad since 2018, Onazi is still dreaming to don the Nigerian jersey again, footballrover reports.
In an intriguing interview, the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) winner expressed confusion over being labeled an “ex-international,” while reaffirming his commitment to the national team.
Playing currently for Serie D side Avezzano, the 31-year-old still believes he has more to offer, despite his last call-up being several years ago.
The ex-Trabzonspor star is determined to remind fans and critics that he is far from finished.
Ogenyi Onazi unfazed by retirement rumors
In an interview with Brila.net, Onazi emphatically dismissed rumors that his career with the Super Eagles was over.
“I have not retired. If they call me an ex-international, I don’t know why, but anyway it is okay,” he said, leaving no doubt that he still has aspirations of representing Nigeria.
Injuries may have kept him sidelined, but Onazi refuses to fade into the background.
Ogenyi Onazi’s international journey began in 2012 under the tutelage of the late Stephen Keshi.
His performances were instrumental in Nigeria’s AFCON victory in 2013, and he proudly represented the nation at both the 2014 and 2018 FIFA World Cups.
While Onazi’s career has taken him to the fourth tier of Italian football, he seems to have found new drive to return to the Super Eagles.
His experience and passion could make him an asset to the national team once again.
With 52 caps, one goal, and four assists for Nigeria, Onazi is hoping for another chance to wear the green and white and continue his legacy.
