Odion Ighalo has finally opened his account for the season, leading Al-Wehda to a hard-fought home victory over Al-Orubah on Wednesday evening.
After a goalless performance in their season opener against Al-Riyadh—a thrilling 3-3 draw—Ighalo has now found the back of the net in matchday two of the Saudi Professional League.
The former Manchester United star struck the opening goal that led Al-Wehda to a narrow 2-1 win, jumpstarting their campaign.
It was a well-deserved victory for Ighalo and his teammates at the King Abdul Aziz Stadium, where they dominated the match and created more goal-scoring opportunities.
Ighalo’s goal came in stunning fashion, barely 59 seconds after the kickoff.
The Nigerian forward connected brilliantly with Mohamed Al-Makahasi, sending the home fans into an early jubilation as he put the hosts ahead.
The visitors, however, were not to be outdone. Zayad Al Hanety levelled the score after 32 minutes, restoring hope for Al-Orubah.
Just six minutes later, Croatian midfielder Karlo Muhar thought he had put Al-Orubah in front, but his goal was disallowed due to a foul in the buildup.
The teams went into halftime deadlocked at 1-1.
Twelve minutes into the second half, Ighalo was substituted for Murad Khadhari.
Even without Ighalo on the pitch, Al-Wehda managed to secure the win.
Khadhari delivered the decisive blow, scoring three minutes into added time to seal the victory and all three points.
It’s a double celebration for Ighalo and Al-Wehda—his first goal of the season and the team’s first win.
A promising start as they head into their next fixture against Al-Ittihad.
