The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has issued a stern warning to clubs regarding time-wasting tactics involving ball boys during matches, Footballrover reports.
This caution comes as part of the league’s efforts to maintain the integrity of the sport.
In a memo addressed to clubs on Tuesday, NPFL’s Chief Operating Officer, Davidson Owumi, expressed concern about the negative influence of these practices on young ball boys.
He emphasized the need to curb unsportsmanlike behavior, particularly the act of concealing match balls, especially when it benefits the home team.
Owumi urged clubs to take immediate action by conducting orientation sessions for ball boys.
The aim is to ensure they fully comprehend and follow the rules of the game.
Failure to do so, according to him could result in severe consequences, including fines and point deductions, as specified in Rule C18 of the NPFL Framework and Rules.
His statement reads;
“It has come to our attention, the unscrupulous and undisciplined behavior of ball boys on match days. The continuous attitude of ball boys hiding match balls when the game is still on and mostly in favour of the home team shall no more be tolerated.”
The statement further noted;
“We urge you to take immediate steps to rectify this situation by carrying out orientation sessions for the ball boys to ensure that they understand and adhere to the rules. Failure to do so may result in penalties, including fines and points deductions as outlined in Rule C18 of the NPFL Framework and Rules.”
By taking these measures, the NPFL aims to promote fair play, uphold the principles of the sport, and enhance the overall quality of football matches in Nigeria.
Clubs are expected to adhere to these guidelines to maintain the league’s credibility.
