Rivers United bounced back to winning ways with a comfortable victory over MFM FC during their Nigeria Professional League game at Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium on Sunday.
Goals from Nelson Esor, George Akpabio, Ishaq Kayode and a brace from Chijioke Akuneto was all the Stanley Eguma side needed to secure a home win and all three points on a rainy day.
The Rivers Boys got off to a good start, with Lookman, Esor, and Onoja dominating the midfield and Ishaq looking energetic in attack.
Nyima Nwagua should have given the hosts the lead less than four minutes into the game, but he failed to score.
12 minutes later, Nelson Esor found the back of the net, tapping in a rebound off an Ishaq Kayode shot to give Rivers United the lead.
The Pride of Rivers pushed for a second goal and extended their lead before the interval as it continued to rain cats and dogs in Rivers’ capital city.
Nyima Nwagua deftly drew away from his marker before finding Kazie Enyinnaya, whose shot is deflected by Akuneto and slid past the goalkeeper for United’s second goal.
Chijioke Akuneto grabbed his brace two minutes into the second half. The attacker was at the right place at the right time to score Rivers Utd’s third goal.
As the hosts continued to search for more goals, Sikiru Olatunbosun came on to replace Chijioke Akuneto in the 68th minute. The two former MFM players took their places against their former team.
And to think it’s game over for the visitors, George Akpabio makes it 4-0 before Ishaq Kayode added another with a superb goal from a well taken free kick to seal a well deserved win for the Pride of Rivers.
Rivers United extends their advantage at the top of the NPFL standings to seven points with the 5-0 win.
