The Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) has handed down verdicts on Enyimba International FC and Rangers International FC with heavy sanctions following the controversial Matchday 35 encounter at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu.
Enyimba FC has been found guilty of breaching several rules, including failing to ensure proper conduct, disrupting a live broadcast, throwing objects onto the field, encroaching onto the field, and refusing to continue the match, Footballrover reports.
The club has been fined a total of N9 million (approximately $22,000 USD) and forfeits three points and three goals in favour of Rangers.
Additionally, Enyimba must identify and produce evidence for further investigation and sanction other players and officials complicit in the disruptive conduct.
The players identified are Eze Ekwutoziam (Jersey No. 6), Chibuike Nwaiwu (Jersey No. 27), and Akanni Elijah (Jersey No. 10).
Rangers International FC has also been found guilty of breaching rules, including over-ticketing, failing to provide adequate security, and failing to implement effective crowd control measures.
The club has been fined a total of N5 million (approximately $12,000 USD) and must implement a more effective crowd control mechanism in subsequent home games.
Both clubs have 48 hours to accept the sanctions or elect to be dealt with by a disciplinary panel.
This verdict comes after a thorough review of the official reports from the Matchday 35 fixture, which ended in controversy when Enyimba fans disrupted the game, leading to its abandonment.
The NPFL’s decision aims to uphold the principles of fair play, sportsmanship, and league rules while also ensuring the safety and security of players, officials, and spectators.
