The 2024/25 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season kicked off fully in spectacular fashion with a total of 18 goals spread across several thrilling matches in the opening weekend.
Fans were obviously treated to a combination of tight contests and dominant displays as both home and away sides made their marks early in the season, Footballrover reports
One of the standout moments came from Olawale Doyeni of Plateau United, who delivered the first goal and penalty of the season.
His spot-kick was enough to secure a 1-0 win over Katsina United at the Jos International Stadium.
Meanwhile, Niger Tornadoes’ Joseph Godstime netted the first away goal of the season in a 2-1 victory against Kwara United.
Sunshine Stars also displayed their firepower with a commanding 3-0 win over Bayelsa United, grabbing the third goal of the season in the process.
Away teams had a successful opening weekend, with Remo Stars, Enyimba, and Niger Tornadoes all securing victories on the road.
Remo Stars overpowered Abia Warriors 2-0, while Enyimba staged a brilliant comeback to defeat Heartland FC 3-1. Niger Tornadoes completed their strong start with a 2-1 win against Kwara United.
In a dramatic moment, Rivers United goalkeeper Bamidele Adeniyi became the first player to be sent off this season, receiving a red card during their goalless draw with Bendel Insurance.
Kano Pillars made a statement by dismantling NPFL newcomers Ikorodu City 3-0, while Nasarawa United and Shooting Stars played out a tense 1-1 draw, with Shooting Stars grabbing a late equaliser to salvage a point.

Recall that Enugu Rangers and El-Kanemi Warriors had initially settled for a goalless draw last weekend, while Lobi Stars will entertain Akwa United later tomorrow.
