The Nigerian National League (NNL) has taken decisive action against Rovers FC of Calabar and Ekiti United FC following an incident-packed match that led to its abandonment.
Rovers FC, the host team, has been fined a hefty sum of N1,000,000 for a series of infractions, including inadequate security measures, assault, and pitch invasion, Footballrover reports.
Ekiti United FC, the visiting team, also faced consequences, receiving a fine of N500,000 for refusing to continue the game due to security concerns.
The league’s Chief Operating Officer, Dr. Ayo Abdulraham, emphasised the importance of upholding league regulations and ensuring the safety of players and officials.
He highlighted Article 16.2 of the league’s rules framework in justifying Rovers FC’s fine and referenced Article 14.9 for Ekiti United FC’s penalty.
In addition to the fines, both teams have been ordered to conclude the match at a neutral venue in Eket, Akwa Ibom State.
Meanwhile, the referee and match commissioner assigned to the game have been recommended for delisting due to their poor handling of the situation.
This action comes as part of the NNL’s commitment to maintaining integrity and professionalism within the league.
The organization has also levied a fine of N1,000,000 against Coal City FC for failing to present their club licenses during their match against Stormers FC of Abeokuta.
Stormers FC, the opposing team, emerged victorious despite playing the game under protest.
