Nigerians are urging Super Falcons’ stalwart, Onome Ebi, to hang up her football boots and retire after a lengthy and illustrious career representing her country.
Ebi, the resilient Super Falcons defender, has been a fixture on the national team for numerous years, gracing both African and international tournaments.
A remarkable milestone in her career saw her become the first female African footballer to participate in a staggering six FIFA Women’s World Cup tournaments.
However, after her recent appearance at the 2023 Women’s World Cup, where she became the oldest female player in Africa to compete, fans have been vocal in requesting her retirement, particularly after her name appeared in the squad list to face Sao Tome female team.
The calls for Ebi to step down from the Super Falcons come as she reaches the age of 40, having made her debut in the Women’s World Cup back in 2003.
Over the years, she has consistently contributed to the team’s success, featuring in six African Women’s Championships and emerging victorious in four of them.
On social media, particularly on Nigerians’ preferred platform, X (formerly known as Twitter), fans have expressed their belief that Ebi has accomplished enough in her career and should consider retiring from professional football.
Reacting to the calls for retirement, Fisayo Dairo of ACL Sports remarked;
“Lol. Onome Ebi refused to retire from Super Falcons. Many of these people don’t know when to stop and we know what ends it.”
Dnetblaster echoed this sentiment, saying;
“I was actually expecting Onome Ebi to leave the national team after the World Cup. That was the perfect stage to bow out but some people don’t know how to respect and preserve their legacy.”

Adepoju Tobi Samuel also pointed out that;
“Onome Ebi before the World Cup, she was listed as Abia Angels defender. After the World Cup, she has been listed as Naija Ratels player. Make we fear God oh.”

While Triedstone Sports emphasized that
“Onome Ebi hasn’t announced her retirement, meaning she’s available for Super Falcons, though she hasn’t played a club game for over a year. She keeps announcing the NWFL teams without playing. The latest is Fc Ratels. She should only be invited after 6 months of club football.”
