In a disappointing afternoon for Nigerian internationals Taiwo Awoniyi and Ola Aina, Nottingham Forest succumbed to a 0-2 defeat against English Premier League leaders, Manchester City, in the sixth round of the 2023/2024 EPL season at the Etihad Stadium.
During the match, Taiwo Awoniyi found himself in the referee’s book with a yellow card in the 58th minute of the second half following an altercation with match official Josh Smith.
Meanwhile, Ola Aina was replaced by Divock Origi in the 75th minute.
Taiwo Awoniyi, who played for 75 minutes, had just one shot throughout the game before being substituted for Chris Wood.
Manchester City swiftly took the lead with two goals in the opening 14 minutes of the first half.
Phil Foden netted the first goal in the 7th minute, while Erling Haaland added the second in the 14th minute, marking his eighth goal of the 2023/2024 EPL season.
The match took a fiery turn when Manchester City’s attacking midfielder, Rodri, received a red card for violent conduct in the 46th minute.
As of now, Manchester City leads the EPL table with 18 points after six rounds, while Nottingham Forest holds the 11th spot with seven points from the same number of matches.
The Super Eagles duo Taiwo Awoniyi and Ola Aina will now shift their focus to their upcoming fixture at home against Brentford, aiming to recover from this setback.
