Sunday Adetunji is giddy with excitement over the opportunity to play in the UEFA Champions League, which not many Nigerian footballers get to do, let alone kick the ball for the full 90 minutes.
After helping his team FC Shkupi win the Macedonian First Football League trophy two months ago, Sunday Adetunji now gets to take a shot at the Champions League ball, of which is a dream come true for him.
The 24-year-old striker was eager to make an impact on Tuesday when he made his Champions League debut.
The Nigerian forward then scored his first ever goal in an European competition, dubbed it a “special moment,” and opted to dedicate it all to his fans for their incredible support.
Sunday Adetunji scored the second goal to inspire his team to a 3-0 victory over Lincoln Red Imps in their UEFA Champions League First Qualifying Round, Leg 1 game at the Cair Stadium.
Barely 11 minutes into the game, Senegalese midfielder Mamadou Danfa gave the home team the lead. Seventeen minutes later, Sunday Adetunji doubled the advantage.
Following Gagi Margvelashvili’s straight red card just nine minutes into the second half, Lincoln Red Imps were reduced to ten men. To add insult to injury, Scott Wiseman’s own-goal for FC Shkupi in the 62nd minute made it 3-0 and guaranteed the victory.
When they travel to Victoria Stadium on Tuesday, July 12, to face the Gibraltar National League side in the second league, Sunday Adetunji and his teammates will be hoping to complete the task with their 3-0 lead.
The forward tweeted on his official account shortly after the game to say;
“My mama, I don finally play original UCL ball. Those days for Ifako Ijaiye, na the fake UCL ball we dey use motivate ourselves say one day, we go play for this level. I appreciate you all. Happy Eid el Kabir. God bless you all.”

Recall that Sunday Adetunji inspired FC Shkupi to success in their last campaign by scoring 20 goals in 28 games during his rookie season? Well, he’s off to a great start in the Champions League.
The FC Shkupi forward claimed that helping his team to win both the season double and qualifying for the UEFA Champions League group stages is his ultimate goal.
