Nigerian duo Chidera Ejuke and Alhassan Yusuf displayed remarkable performances in a thrilling showdown against Barcelona as they earned their only victory of the Champions League group stage on Wednesday night.
Ejuke’s attacking prowess was on full display, manoeuvring past Barcelona’s defenders and contributing significantly to his team’s victory against the Spanish giants, Footballrover reports.
In midfield, Alhassan Yusuf was equally impressive, orchestrating plays and securing an assist in Antwerp’s remarkable 3-2 triumph at the Barcelona Stadium.
During his 80-minute playtime, Chidera Ejuke completed a remarkable nine dribbles and crafted three significant scoring opportunities.
Meanwhile, Alhassan Yusuf exhibited his defensive prowess with four successful tackles in the 90 minutes of intense gameplay.
Despite their stellar performances, the Nigerian duo, unfortunately, couldn’t carry their team further in the tournament, finishing fourth in the group and getting eliminated.
The Clash: A Glimpse at the Nigerian Stars’ Impact
In the five-goal thriller match that pitted the underdogs against the table-toppers, the early stages didn’t reflect a team struggling for points.
Vermeeren swiftly put Van Bommel’s side ahead within minutes.
Although the Belgian squad was pulled back by Torres’ equaliser later in the half, they regrouped and entered halftime deadlocked at 1-1.
Antwerp surged ahead again in the second half, courtesy of Janssen, only to face a late scare when Guiu’s stoppage-time goal levelled the score to 2-2.
However, moments later, Ilenikhena delivered the winning blow for Antwerp, securing a memorable victory over the renowned Blaugrana.
Despite the heroic win, Van Bommel’s squad, already ousted from the group stage, couldn’t alter their Champions League fate, with Barcelona sealing their first-place finish.
