Former Chelsea head coach Jose Mourinho recently unveiled the behind-the-scenes events leading to Kevin De Bruyne and Mo Salah’s exits from Stamford Bridge.
In an exclusive interview on the Obi One podcast, Mourinho shed light on the circumstances that led to the departures of the two football sensations, Footballrover reports
Mourinho recalled a crucial moment during the pre-season in Asia, where he insisted on retaining De Bruyne with the squad instead of sending him on loan to a German club.
The Belgian midfielder, having started the Premier League season in the starting lineup, expressed a desire to leave after a crucial match against Bayern in the European Super Cup, citing limited playing time.
“When you are at Chelsea and you want to leave, go, and another one comes. They were just kids who couldn’t wait, and their careers say they were right, but it wasn’t down to me,” Mourinho clarified, addressing the situation.
Regarding Salah’s tenure at Chelsea, Mourinho clarified misconceptions, affirming his role in bringing the Egyptian winger to the club.
“I was the one who said buy that guy,” Mourinho emphasized.
Despite advocating for Salah’s signing, Mourinho highlighted the need for players to meet Chelsea’s performance standards, noting Salah’s eagerness for regular game time.
“Then comes the part where, to be a Chelsea player, you need to perform or you have to wait. He didn’t want to wait; he wanted to go on loan,” Mourinho explained, shedding light on Salah’s subsequent loan spells before Chelsea ultimately decided to sell him.
During Mourinho’s second tenure at Chelsea, De Bruyne and Salah were acquired as relatively unknown talents. De Bruyne arrived from Genk, while Salah joined from Swiss side Basel.
Mourinho’s disclosures offer a unique window into the complex dynamics that triggered these now-famous football players’ departure from Chelsea, revealing their goals and the difficulties they encountered in the world of high-stakes sports.
