Nantes’ struggle to break free from their dreadful run of form took another bitter turn on Saturday, despite a standout performance from Moses Simon, who scored and assisted another.
The French side could only watch as their hopes of securing a vital win were dashed by two late goals in their Ligue 1 clash with Lens, Footballrover reports.
The Super Eagles wingerâs individual brilliance could not prevent his side from sinking deeper into a rut that seems impossible to escape.
At the Stade Bollaert-Delelis, Moses was undoubtedly the brightest spark for Nantes, delivering man of the match performance.
With his third league goal of the season, he delivered an assist that briefly seemed to set them on course for victory.
However, the clubâs ongoing struggles were too much to overcome, as they succumbed to a 3-2 defeat. This result extends their winless streak to eight matches, further highlighting the depth of their crisis.
Moses’ display was a beacon of hope amidst the gloom. His seventh goal contribution in 10 appearances this seasonâcomprising three goals and four assistsâwas a timely reminder of his quality.
Yet, as the game unfolded, his efforts were overshadowed by Nantes’ inability to close out the match, keeping the team firmly rooted in their ongoing poor form.
Nantes poor form continues despite Moses Simon’s impact
The match began with a quick shock for Nantes, as Lens took the lead after just 21 minutes through a precise penalty from Przemyslaw Frankowski.
The visitors responded, though, when Facundo Medina commited a foul in the box, allowing the Nigerian winger to calmly convert the penalty into the right corner, levelling the score at 1-1.
As the match wore on, Moses continued to inspire his teammates. In the 71st minute, a perfectly timed through ball from Moses set up Nicolas Cozza, who made no mistake in scoring to give Nantes a 2-1 lead.
But once again, Nantesâ defence faltered under pressure, and within four minutes, Lens had levelled the score at 2-2, thanks to a clinical strike from Hamzat Ojediran.
With the match nearing its end, Adrien Thomasson netted a header in the 90th minute to hand Lens a dramatic 3-2 win.
For Moses, it was another frustrating outing, despite his commendable efforts. After 80 minutes on the pitch, he was substituted by Sorba Thomas, having made 25 touches, delivered 11 accurate passes, created four big chances, and contributed defensively with four recoveries and four duels won.
This defeat highlights Nantes‘ ongoing poor form, leaving Simon Moses and his teammates with much to ponder as they prepare for their next fixture against Le Havre.
Moses will look to continue his individual progress, but it remains to be seen whether the team can finally break their winless streak and turn things around.
