FC Cincinnati 2 have strengthened their squad with the acquisition of Nigerian attacking midfielder Monsuru Opeyemi on a free transfer from Liga Portugal 2 side FC Vizela.
The deal is subject to the receipt of an International Transfer Certificate (ITC), the club confirmed today, Footballrover reports.
Opeyemi’s journey from Portugal to FC Cincinnati 2
The 21-year-old midfielder joins FC Cincinnati 2 after a three-year spell in Portugal, where he primarily featured for FC Vizela’s U23 team.
Opeyemi made 27 appearances across all competitions, netting seven goals and providing one assist.
His standout performances came in the 2023 U23 Taça Revelação, where he scored three goals in the group stage, including a brace against CF Estrela Amadora.
Opeyemi’s only senior appearance for Vizela’s first team came in a 1-0 victory over Rio Ave FC in Portugal’s top-flight league in 2022.
During the 2023-2024 season, he was loaned to SC Covilhã in Liga 3, Portugal’s third tier, where he enjoyed a productive campaign, scoring three goals and registering five assists in 12 league outings.
International experience and future with FC Cincinnati 2
On the international stage, Opeyemi has represented Nigeria at various youth levels.
He was part of Nigeria’s squad at the 2019 FIFA U17 World Cup in Brazil, where he featured in two group-stage matches and helped the team advance to the Round of 16.
He has also been involved with the Nigeria U23 national team.
Opeyemi has joined FC Cincinnati 2’s preseason camp in Clearwater, Florida, as the club prepares for the 2025 MLS campaign.
