Inter returned back to the top of Serie A for the time being after a 3-1 victory over a spirited Spezia at Stadio Alberto Picco with Lautaro Martinez notching his 5th goal of the season on Friday night.
The visitors grabbed the lead 31 minutes into the game after Brozovic looked up and lofted a potential throughball into the head of D’Ambrosio, who stayed forward.
The Croatian dashed into the box and lashed a left-footed shoy into the top left corner with a nudge from the centre-back.
D’Ambrosio didn’t have absolute control of the header, but he was able to direct it back into Brozovic’s path, where he made no mistake. The goal stands after a quick VAR check to ensure D’Ambrosio was onside.
Inter were hardly troubled in the first 45 minutes, controlling 70% of possession. In 20 of their 32 league games this season, the champs prevented their opponents from scoring in the first half.
Martinez scored Inter’s second goal 73 minutes into the second half. Perisic’s right-footed cross was brilliantly flicked into the far bottom corner for the substitute, who cleverly stuck out his right foot.
Perisic had plenty of time to sprint down the left side and switched onto his right foot. Martinez’s finish was quick and precise as Spezia’s chances of returning to the game were soon dashed.
Martinez has scored 15 goals in Serie A this season, more than any other Inter player. So far, he’s been instrumental in the champions’ title defense.
As Maggiore’s magnificent late goal proved to be a minor consolation for the hosts, Sanchez came off the bench to score to seal the game and all three points just three minutes into extra time.
