Man City 2-0 Chelsea: Defeat at the Etihad is a step forward - Graham Potter

Despite Chelsea’s recent struggles—they have only won two of their last seven games—Graham Potter noticed some encouraging signs after Wednesday night clash vs Man City. Man City 2-0 Chelsea: Defeat at the Etihad is a step forward - Graham Potter

Considering the fact that the Blues suffered their third loss in the last four games last night, Chelsea boss Graham Potter strongly feels his side made progress during the 2-0 EFL Cup loss to Man City on Wednesday.

In spite of a terrible run of play recently, the West London side have only won two of their last seven games under Potter, who took over from Thomas Tuchel in September.

Potter, who was saddened by the loss to Arsenal in the Premier League on Sunday, made multiple changes to his starting lineup and was actually pleased despite the disappointing outcome.

The Chelsea coach told reporters;

I thought there were quite a few positives. Obviously, we’re disappointed with the result but in terms of how we played, we created some good chances, there was a better structure and performance level.”

He added that;

The team looked closer to what we want it to look like [compared to Arsenal]. The boys had great courage and they tried against a top team. Their goalkeeper got man of the match and I think that tells a little bit of the story. But overall, I think it was a step forward for us.”

Chelsea have lost all four of their league games and in their final match before the World Cup break, Potter’s team will have to travel down to face third-place Newcastle United in the Premier League on Saturday.

We’re concerned when we don’t get the results we want. Our performances have not been what we want either in the last couple of games. Tonight was a big step in terms of how we want to play, and we can get confidence from that.” – Potter said.
The Chelsea Boss stressed that;
It’s a big game at Newcastle, 5.30 on the TV, it’ll be a fantastic atmosphere. They’re doing really well, so it’ll be a tough game, but we have to try and go there and get the three points.”

Meanwhile, Graham Potter has expressed satisfaction over Lewis Hall’s performance last night after the 18-year-old England youth international made his second career start.

During his 75-minute stint, the Chelsea midfielder displayed a performance worthy of first team role and had a good chance late in the first half that City goalkeeper Stefan Ortega turned away.

I really enjoyed his performance. He took responsibility, took the ball in tight areas, attacked the box, and could’ve scored a couple of goals on another day. It was a really nice performance, a mature performance I thought. He is a quiet lad but goes about his work. I’ve been really impressed with him.” – Potter said.
