Mali dominates West African derby, secures Olympic spot

It was a match to determine the bronze medal winner of the competition, and Africa’s third representatives in men’s football event of Paris 2024 Olympic Games in France.

Mali overpowered Guinea in penalty shootout after the match ended goal-less after 90 minutes regulation time.

The excruciating third place encounter, played at Ibn Batouta Stadium, Tangier Morocco, yesterday, Friday, July 7,2023, produced two yellow cards for Mali, Alhassane Tamboura (56th minute), Mohamadou Lamine Bah (86th minute), and Guinean Naby Camara (90+1 minute), the Malian won 4-3 on penalties.

One Malian player, Issoufi Maiga, and two Guineans, Aguibou Camara, and Seydouba Cisse lost their respective penalty kicks.Mamady Diambou, Hamidou, Hamed Diamande, and Mohamed Lamine Bah converted their penalty kicks, while Fode Camara, Mohamed Lamine Soumah, and Ousmane Camare scored for Guinea to hand the Malians a 4-3 victory.

Later today, Saturday, July 8,2023, at Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex, Rabat, Morocco, by 9:00 pm Nigerian time, hosts, Morocco, will battle defending Champions, Egypt, in a North African derby to determine the winner of U-23 AFCON football tournament in Morocco.

The fourth continental reprentatives in Paris 2024, France, will be decided after a playoff between the U-23 AFCON third place loser, and the representative of Asian Football Confederation, AFC, later this year.

Moroccan attacking sensation, Abdessamad Ezzalzouli, is set to clinch the highest goal scorer of the tournament after scoring four goals in the championship before the final match today in Rabat, Morocco.
