Nigerian striker Louis Ogana put out a stellar performance to inspire Churchill Brothers to their first victory in 79 days with a commanding 2-0 win over Delhi FC in an intense I-League encounter.
In a highly anticipated clash at Tilak Maidan, Ogana’s heroics lifted Churchill Brothers from their recent slump, breaking a streak of draws and defeats that had plagued them since their last triumph against Neroca FC in December, Footballrover reports.
Under the guidance of coach Francesc Bonet, Ogana propelled Churchill Brothers to a well-deserved victory by executing a header in the 12th minute and calmly converting a penalty just eight minutes later, marking his first win in charge since assuming the role in January.
The match witnessed the Churchill Brothers’ resurgence, exemplified by their strategic lineup adjustments, signalling a determined effort to reverse their fortunes.
Despite Delhi FC’s attempts to assert dominance through swift passing manoeuvres orchestrated by their star players, the Churchill Brothers’ stalwart defence thwarted their advances.
The breakthrough moment arrived courtesy of meticulous team play, as Stendly Fernandes’ precise cross from the right flank found Abdou Karim, whose delivery met Ogana’s head, leaving Delhi FC’s goalkeeper Naveen Kumar helpless.
Buoyed by the opener, Churchill Brothers pressed on, capitalizing on Ogana’s relentless pursuit of the ball, resulting in a penalty that the Nigerian forward calmly dispatched into the net, securing his brace and sealing Churchill Brothers’ much-needed victory.
It’s back-to-back goals for the 28-year-old forward, who could only feature for 65 minutes before he was subsequently substituted.
Despite flashes of brilliance from Delhi FC, especially through Barboza’s attempts, the Churchill Brothers’ resilience and tactical acumen ensured their dominance throughout the match, denying their opponents any significant opportunities to level the score.
With this crucial win, Churchill Brothers move to the ninth position in the league standings with 17 points from 16 games, while Delhi FC retains their seventh spot with 22 points from the same number of outings.
As the Churchill Brothers celebrate their long-awaited triumph, their renewed momentum and Ogana’s stellar performance give them a promising resurgence in their I-League campaign, instilling hope and excitement among fans as they look ahead to future challenges.
