Ademola Lookman had a night to remember as he ended Stuttgart’s impressive year-long home streak with yet another remarkable performance.
With his team in need of a boost, Lookman seized the moment, delivering a goal that not only silenced the Stuttgart crowd but strengthened Atalanta’s standing in the Champions League.
Fresh off the pitch, he hinted at what makes moments like these so satisfying, saying, “It’s always good to do this.”
But what exactly drove Lookman to make his mark against Stuttgart, and why was this win so crucial for Atalanta?
Lookman had another solid impact on Wednesday night, as he continued his stellar run for Atalanta, scoring his eighth goal of the season in a 2-0 win.
His goal also marked his second Champions League strike this season, capping a strong performance that shows why he’s gradually becoming a world-class star.
Playing alongside Mario Retegui, Lookman proved effective once again, following their successful partnership that led to a decisive 3-0 win over Napoli earlier.
Against Stuttgart, the first half saw few chances, with both sides struggling to break through until Atalanta’s coach made a key change.
At halftime, Atalanta’s manager, Gian Piero Gasperini, swapped Mario Pasalic for Charles De Ketelaere, and it quickly paid off.
The Belgian forward’s cross found Lookman in a prime position, and he wasted no time, scoring past Stuttgart’s Alexander Nübel to break the deadlock.
Lookman’s role in ending Stuttgart’s home streak
Lookman’s performance held Stuttgart at bay, setting the stage for Nicolo Zaniolo’s late goal in the 89th minute, which sealed Atalanta’s three points and sealed their nine-game unbeaten run.
Reflecting on the match, Lookman emphasised the importance of the win, which propelled Atalanta to eight points.
He praised his team’s defensive unity and expressed how satisfying it was to contribute on both ends of the pitch.
Lookman also acknowledged the tough schedule ahead, noting that the Champions League challenges them, but his focus remains on taking each game as it comes.
“Yes! Very important game for us to win tonight; it takes us up to 8 points. So we needed to win tonight and put in a performance to win.”
Speaking on his goal, the Nigerian added,
“Anyway I can help the team, whether it’s attacking or defensive, but you know, I love to score goals, so it’s always good to do this, but the team put up top performance defensively also. We showed we were strong, compact, and solid together, so that’s the most important.”
“The victory put us in a good position; we continue to look forward to our game; we have a tough run of games against top teams, so the Champions League is never easy, so yeah! We are happy to be here, and that’s the most important thing. We take every game as they come.”
With Stuttgart’s home streak broken, Lookman and Atalanta have sent a strong message to their upcoming opponents as they remain unbeaten in their last nine games, winning seven and drawing just two.
